Sources: Mets Desire Sheffield 2-Yr Deal

Sources this morning told me that the New York Mets are considering offerring Gary Sheffield a 2-year deal, for 2010, and 2011.
The Mets are thrilled with what Sheffield has brought to the team, both in production as well as attitude. The only thing standing in the way would be the health issues any 40+ player has at this point in his career and I'm sure the Mets would like the 2nd year of the contract to be a team option.
I ws told that the Mets would like to put to bed the status of the 2010 and 2011 outfield, by having a full time trio of Sheffield, Carlos Beltran, and Fernando Martinez. Betran will be paid 18.5mil through the 2011 season and Martinez is years away from a salary issue.
Sheffield is making 14mil this year, but 13.6mil is being paid by Detroit.
There's no way he'll get that from the Mets, but an 8-9mil/yr deal for 2-years is not out of the question, especially if the Mets dump the salaries of Billy Wagner (10.5mil), J.J. Putz (8.6mil with team option), Ryan Church (2.8mil), and/or Tim Redding (2.25mil).
