Charlotte 7, Buffalo 6 - After Game Notes

Teams of young men never play well after their friends are cut. OF Bobby Kielty, Javier Valentin, and Wily Mo Pena were cut last night by the team, which always results in a bummer game. Seems like Buffalo is still trying to come up with a winning combination here.

RP Arturo Lopez was signed and activiated before this game, but didn’t come out of the pen.

Some good news was the continued 0.00 ERA for RP Adam Bostick, after pitching 2.0 more innings. Don’t be surprised if he isn’t called to Queens at some time after the ASG, especially if pitchers like Bobby Parnell continue to struggle.

Speaking of good pitching, let’s give some props to RP Eddie Kunz. He has very quietly put up great numbers (18 relief appearances; 2.56 ERA) and has successfully completed the conversion from closer to regular relief pitcher. Remember, he’s still only 23 years old.

SP Brandon Knight pitched like Bobby Knight, giving up seven unearned runs in 4.0 innings pitched. His yearly ERA is now 4.89 and I also wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t cut soon. The Bisons rotation needs to start over, behind the excellent SP1 pitching of Nelson Figueroa. I’m sure Fernando Nieve will come back this way soon, but what he keeps up the good work in Queens. I look for Knight to be cut when Dillon Gee is activated.

OF Fernando Martinez continues a slow start since returning from Queens, which everyone goes through for a month (Nick Evans) or the rest of their career (Victor Diaz). It was interesting to see that Jesus Feliciano pinched hit for Martinez in the 9th inning (and doubled in a run).

Right now, the Bisons have seven potential major league players on their roster (Niese, Stoner, Gee, Kunz, Bostick, Carlos Muniz, and Martinez), and only F-Mart is a regular day player.
