Three B-Mets Headed to Europe for 2009 Baseball World Cup

2009 B-Mets’ Ike Davis, Jonathan Malo and Shawn Bowman have been chosen by their respective countries to play in the 2009 Baseball World Cup to be played in eight European countries over 21 days. The tournament includes 22 different countries, most notably the 2007 champions, the United States.

Davis will represent the United States in the World Cup as an outfielder in contrast to his primary position, first base. Davis batted .309 with a team-high 13 homers and 43 RBIs with Binghamton in 2009. It is not his first experience with Team USA. He was a member of the USA Baseball Youth National Team in 2003 and the Junior National Team in 2004.

Malo is also making a repeat appearance with his country’s team, Team Canada. He was a member of the Canadian Junior National Team in 2001 where he was teammates with Bowman, who joins him on the 2009 Canadian roster for the World Cup. Malo hit .245 with a homer and 28 RBIs with Binghamton in 2009.

Bowman in no stranger to Team Canada, he was most recently on Canada’s 2009 World Baseball Classic roster, however, he did not play in either of the team’s games. He played shortstop for Team Canada at the 2002 World Junior Baseball Championship and was named to the All-Tournament team. With the B-Mets in 2009, he played primarily third base and hit at a .294 clip with 9 homers and 44 RBIs.

The U.S. begins play September 10 in Regensburg, Germany against Venezuela. Germany and China are also in the same pool with the two teams, classified as Group E in the first phase of the round-robin qualifying round.

Team Canada will square off with South Korea September 10 in Sundbyberg, Sweden in its first-round game. The two teams are joined by Netherland Antilles and Sweden in Group C.

The semi-finals and finals of the 2009 World Cup will take place in Italy September 22-27.
