The Keepers - #39 - RP - Matias Carillo Jr.

39. Matias Carillo Jr. – RP – A+ - 23/yrs.

Carillo’s professional career started with the VSL Mets, where he pitched in 2006 (3-5, 3.38, in 12 starts). He was sent stateside in 2007 season and assigned to Kingsport (0-0, 1.23 in 5 appearances), but ended it with Savannah (0-0, 3.72 in 10 relief appearances). In 2008, Carillio pitched first for St. Lucie (0-1, 5.25 in 5 appearances), but was sent down to Brooklyn (1-0, 2.35 in 15 appearances).

In September 2008, Patrick Hickey wrote on: Mattias Carrillo- Despite a huge lack of playing time, Carrillo was extremely solid as a middle reliever. However, like Clyne and Rosa, his control is questionable and he needs to start developing his other pitches. Otherwise, he’ll be nothing more than a decent minor league reliever. - Final Grade- B

Carillo had a wonderful 2009 for Brooklyn, going 1-2,3.14, in 1 relief appearances. It included 32-Ks in 28.2-IP and only three base on balls. He bumped again to St. Lucie and struggled for the second time at that level, going 1-1, 9.28, in nine appearances.

Forecast: Carillo has spent enough time in the lower franchises and his excellent 2009 record in Brooklyn has earned him another shot in St. Lucie. There’s no reason for him to go back to Savannah. Done that. 2010 will be the make it or break it year for Carillio, who must dominate above the A level, if he ever wants to play in the Bigs. This will be his third, and last, shot at A+.
