The B-Mets won their second series of the young
season yesterday with a 10-4 wire-to-wire victory over Portland
to take the series from the Sea Dogs two games to one. Binghamton
spotted starter Mike Antonini a four-run lead in the
first inning thanks to an RBI double from Nick Evans and a
three-run homer from D.J. Wabick. Third baseman Zach Lutz
added the B-Mets fifth run in the third inning on a solo homer
over the Maine Monster, increasing the lead to 5-1. Jonathan
Malo, who hit two doubles in the contest, hit is first twobagger
in the fourth that brought in two runs. Evans capped
the scoring in the inning with an RBI single to score Malo,
making it 8-1. The lead was plenty for Antonini, who tossed
5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits to pick up his
second win of the year. Luke Montz finished the scoring for
Binghamton with a two-run homer in the seventh off reliever
Tommy Hottovy, his second of the season.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP:
recoup after being roughed up for six runs in 3.1 innings at
New Hampshire April 17 in a losing effort. He is 1-1 with a
9.72 ERA in 8.1 innings and has walked nine men. Last year,
Kunz made 40 appearances for Buffalo (AAA) with a 4-5 mark
and a 5.02 ERA in 61 innings. He functioned as the B-Mets
closer in 2008 when he racked up 27 saves. The righty was
taken by the Mets in the second round (42nd overall) in the
2007 draft.
RHP Bobby Bell will make his second consecutive start versus
the B-Mets. On April 17 at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium, he
picked up a win, despite allowing seven earned runs on eight
hits in five inning against Binghamton. He is 1-1 with a 9.90
ERA in 10 innings and has allowed 13 hits. Bell spent 2009
with Dunedin (High-A) where he appeared in 42 games, 10
starts, with a 2.43 ERA in 96.1 innings with 112 strikeouts
and a 4-1 record. He was an 18th round choice in 2008 out of
Rice University by Toronto.
WABICK WORTH THE WAIT:
Outfielder D.J. Wabick, who is
traditionally a slow starter, broke out of a 1-18 slump in Binghamton’s
last series at Portland. He hit in all three contests
with the Sea Dogs, going 5-13 (.385) with a double, a homer
and 5 RBI to raise his average from .056 to .194. In 2009, he
hit just .205 (9-44) in April but broke out in May and hit .377
(40-106).
Reigning Eastern League Hitter of the
Week Nick Evans is on a tear to open the 2010 season. The
first baseman has hit in 10 of 12 games, including multi-hit
performances in seven of them. Entering play tonight, he is
third in the Eastern League with a .396 (21-53) average
