John Madden, Best Met Rotation, Ike, Charlie Steinberg... and Carlos Beltran's Tennis Ball Launcher

John Madden:

Madden was aticvated off of the Binghamton disabled list yesterday… and released.

Madden was an 8th round draft pick by San Diego in the 2005 draft. He spent part of four seasons in their organization, pitching his best ball in 2008 for the A+ Lake Elsinore affiliate (2-3, 3.88, 1.35, 72.0-IP, 52-G, 45-K).

In 2009, he pitched 12 times for the B-Mets (0-0, 8.49).

Best Mets Rotation:

Mets starters Johan Santana, John Maine, Jon Niese, Mike Pelfrey and Oliver Perez have combined to post a 1.39 ERA over their last 10 outings (two starts each). That's the lowest ERA by Mets starters over any 10-game stretch since July 1991, when Dwight Gooden, Frank Viola, David Cone, Ron Darling and Wally Whitehurst produced a 1.27 mark over 10 games. - link

Ike Davis:
Base on their early performances, I've highlighted 10 prospects with rising stocks and 10 whose stocks have taken a hit. This edition features consensus top prospects, bounce-back candidates, and some injured players. Players are ordered based on their proximity to the majors, with a focus on current level. Let us know who else you think belongs in the discussion. -

2. Ike Davis -- Davis quickly gave the Mets reason to bring him up to the majors, drawing nine walks and hitting two home runs in 42 Triple-A plate appearances. He has already made his presence felt in the big leagues, totaling seven hits in his first 23 plate appearances. While he may be prone to striking out, his power and patience could carry him to a solid rookie season. - link

Charlie Steinberg:

"This could put a crimp in that presidential campaign … Charles Steinberg, one of the earliest victims of Frank and Jamie McCourt's impending divorce, has landed on his feet with Major League Baseball. Steinberg was like the 137th public relations person hired to help shape the McCourts' image. And ain't that a swell job? For two years he served as the Dodgers' executive vice president of creative production and communications. He was well respected but made the mistake of gravitating more toward Jamie than Frank, or was at least pulled more in that direction. He was the one who came up with seven-page "Project Jamie" to get her elected president of these United States. Naturally, after ..." - link

Carlos Beltran's tennis ball launcher

Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran's mammoth seven-year, $119 million deal from January 2005 showed that he had all of baseball's five tools but lacked a conditioned ocular enhancer: a gadget that throws numbered, colored tennis balls over 150 mph to help players pick up the speed of a pitched ball. There's a clause in the contract requiring that the Mets lease the machine and retain an operator for it. - link
