5/26/10

Binghamton 10, Richamond 0

From Press Release:

Eddie Kunz and Clint Everts combined on a five-hit shutout and Eric Campbell drove in four runs with three hits in Binghamton’s 10-0 shellacking of Richmond Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Kunz tossed a career-high 7 2/3 innings, allowed just four hits and struck out five to land his fourth win. The B-Mets pounded out 12 hits as a team and outhit their opponent for the first time in its last 10 games.

Binghamton (21-23) got to Flying Squirrels’ starter Craig Clark early. The soft-throwing lefty gave up a single to Kirk Nieuwenhuis to lead off the first. Luis Hernandez and Nick Evans joined Nieuwenhuis on base thanks to walks from Clark. With the bases juiced, Campbell singled up the middle to score a pair of runs. Darren Ford misplayed the ball in center, allowing Evans to advance to third and Campbell to reach second. Mike Nickeas came next and grounded out to third, pushing Evans across to put the margin at 3-0.

Clark’s outing came to an end in the fourth. After Carlos Guzman walked to lead off the inning, Hector Pellot flied out and Kunz sacrificed the runner up to second. Kirk Nieuwenhuis strode to the plate next and worked the count full before connecting on a hanging breaking ball from the southpaw that soared over the wall in right-center for Nieuwenhuis’ sixth homer, upping the lead to 5-0. Clark departed after serving up the gopher ball. He was charged with five runs — four earned — on five hits over 3 2/3 innings and was hung with the loss, his third of 2010.

The B-Mets biggest inning was the sixth, when they doubled their lead with a five-run outburst. Pellot contributed an RBI single, Hernandez drove in two with a double and Campbell capped the scoring with a two-run double over the head of leftfielder Thomas Neal, yielding the 10-0 final score.

Andy Sisco was the only effective pitcher for Richmond. The former Major League left-hander chewed up a season-best three, shutout innings and struck out five.

Everts tossed the final 1 1/3 innings in scoreless fashion to secure Binghamton’s second shutout of the season. The other came against the Erie SeaWolves April 13 at NYSEG Stadium, a 2-0 win.
