LAST GAME: After putting up 10 runs Tuesday, the bats returned


with another fine performance in the B-Mets 9-1 win

over Richmond Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Luis

Hernandez led 12-hit attack with three hits, including a solo

homer, his second. Binghamton got to Squirrels’ starter Mike

MacDonald early and often with a five-run first inning in which

10 men came to the plate. He didn’t fare much better in the

second, allowing the first four to reach before departing. The

B-Mets led 7-0 after two innings and were well on their way to

a second straight win over Richmond. Eric Niesen returned

from the disabled list and failed to allow a hit over 3.1 innings

as the starter. Edgar Ramirez notched his second win with 3.2

innings of shutout relief. Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered for the

second straight game, a solo shot in the third off reliever Craig

Whitaker. Eric Campbell drove in two more runs with a pair of

singles. The only solid pitching performance for Richmond

came from lefty Wilmin Rodriguez, who tossed the final four

innings in scoreless fashion.


STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Chris Schwinden will

make the early morning wake up call for the B-Mets today. He

aced his first test in the Binghamton rotation May 22 at New

Britain with six innings of one-run work with five strikeouts to

beat the Rock Cats for his first Double-A win. The righty

opened the season with St. Lucie (High-A) and impressed with

a 3-0 mark and a 1.83 ERA in seven appearances, two of

which were starts. In 34.1 innings, he walked just five and

struck out 23. Schwinden spent most of 2009 with Savannah

(Low-A) where he was 9-6 with a 3.28 ERA over 115.1 innings.

Schwinden was the Mets’ 22nd round selection in the June

2008 draft out of Fresno Pacific University.


RHP Ronnie Ray is slated to make is slated to make a spot

start for the injured Clayton Tanner this morning. He offered

4.2 innings and allowed three runs on four hits in a start at

Reading May 22 and did not factor in the decision. For the

year, Ray is 0-1 with a 5.70 ERA in 12 appearances, two of

which were starts, spanning 23.2 innings. He appeared in 43

games last season for Fresno (AAA) and racked up a 1-5 mark

and a 5.79 ERA over 65.1 innings. The Giants acquired Ray

along with LHP Dusty Bergman from the Angels in exchange

for LHP Jason Christiansen, August 30, 2005.
