Tonight: The Gnats begin a four-game series with the Rome Braves at State Mutual Stadium, in Rome, GA. The Gnats enter play today one game behind the Augusta GreenJackets for first place in the SAL Southern Division.
Last Night: The Kannapolis Intimidators scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to come from behind to beat the Gnats 3-2. Mark Cohoon threw 6.1 innings, yielding just two unearned runs, one of which scored after he left the game. He struck out six and walked one. Luis Rivera singled twice, scored a run and drove one home.
Now Pitching: Brandon Moore will make his eighth start for the Savannah Sand Gnats. The Gnats are 4-3 when Moore throws and have supported him with 3.9 runs per game, the lowest mark among all Gnats pitchers with four or more starts. Moore is tenth in the SAL with a 2.01 ERA, one of three Gnats in the top ten in the league in ERA. Moore is tied for third in the League in strikeouts with 57, one behind Terry Doyle, who is no longer in the league and Matt Thompson of Hickory. He has been untouchable in May with a 1.55 ERA in his five starts this month. In 29 innings, he’s held the opposition to 19 hits for a .186 opponents’ average and has a strikeout to walk ratio of nine and a half (38 K/4 BB). Moore’s last start was interrupted by an hour and 27 minute rain delay that forced him from the game. Moore was 6-3 with a 2.09 ERA in 82 innings over 13 starts for the Brooklyn Cyclones in 2009, striking out 71 batters and walking 17. He threw the first no-hitter in Brooklyn Cyclones history on August 23, 2009 striking out six and walking three. The Brooklyn Cyclones beat the Aberdeen Ironbirds 5-0 in game one of a seven-inning doubleheader in Moore’s no-hitter. The Mets drafted Moore in the 14th round out of Indiana Wesleyan University in 2008 where he was the Mid-Central College Conference Player of the Year. Moore struck out 104 batters in 76.2 IP, making his 12.8 K/9 IP second in the NAIA.
Vs. Rome: The Gnats are 7-1 against Rome this year, 4-0 at home and 3-1 in Rome. The two teams are scheduled for 23 games this season. The Gnats and Braves split the season series 11-11 last year and the Gnats are 36-44 against Rome as a Mets affiliate.

5/28/10- What is with this lack of Savannah offense? That was really a rough way for Moore to lose tonight. Rome earns their only run on a steal at home after a strikeout? Moore gave up 5 HITS, NO WALKS and 10 STRIKEOUTS.
The Mets seem to send all bats from Brooklyn to St. Lucie each year; however, the 2009 draft was particularly dismal and there just isn't any power bats in the system at the lower levels.
That being said, the Mets also draft an inordinate amount of starting pitchers, hoping to find a gem in the pile... all that has done is cause a traffic jam that prevents the college kids from moving up in a proper time...
a great example of this is a RP named Emary Frederick... went to college, got drafted by the Mets and he's now pitching AA... at 27 years old
