The 2013 Mets Template

There's no way to determine today who will be playing for the New York Mets in 2013. Heck, we're not even sure who will manage this team, "general" manage it, or own it. by then.

What we do know, and can do, is put the current players in the system, into a template and take a look see. This could give us the opportunity to see what will be needed in the future.

First  of all, no guess work here. We're going to include only players that have already proven they can hold their own at the major league level, or are "sure fired" prospects. In this case, there are only four.

Here goes:

1B:  Ike Davis
2B:  Reese Havens
SS:  Jose Reyes
3B:  David Wright
C:  Josh Thole
LF:  Jason Bay
CF: Angel Pagan
RF: Wilmer Flores
Rotation:  Johan Santana, Jenrry Mejia, Jonathan Niese, Mike Pelfrey, Mike Harvey
Closer: Robert Parnell

Yes. Havens needs to stay off the DL, but he does have the talent and pop to play every day in Queens.

On paper... right now... this is a very good team. It's not a killer team, but, even if the Mets didn't spend a single more dollar in free agency, trades, or the draft, they would have a team in 2013 that could compete for a playoff spot.

During this period, the Mets can concentrate on ridding themselves of the contracts of players like Luis Castillo, Oliver Perez, Francesco Rodriquez, and Carlos Beltran.

Now... imagine just one FA pickup a year... for the next two off seasons:

2010-2011:  OF Carl Crawford

2011-2012:  SP Chris Carpenter

See how close you are?

thats also betting on 6 player reaching their potential. atleast a few of them will be dissapointments. we need to spend in the draft and international market. until then, keep reyes and wright. build around them. all you need is a legit power hitter and a good OBP plater and your set.

The sad part, Tyler, is there probably won't be any decent money to sign anyone until 2013.

The Mets profit and loss statement is hurting and there is well over $50mil that has to be cleared before they can compete again on the FA market.

Remember, the FA players and their agents think the Mets ownership and management are a joke... add to that the fact that no power hitter wants to play in that field...

Thanks for posting.

Leave a recipe :)
