 Pedro to DWL:

DePodesta:

In his 18-month tenure as Dodgers' GM from February '04 to October '05, Paul DePodesta did all of the following things:

•Helped construct a roster that produced the 2004 NL West Divison title, the Dodgers' first playoff berth in eight years.

•Acquired Brad Penny, who has become one of the National League's best starters this season (10-1 record, 2.04 era and 1.16 WHIP).

•Correctly foresaw the explosion of the free agent pitching market one year in advance, signing Derek Lowe to an excellent deal, as well as extending Penny through ’08 with an option for '09 at below-market value.

•Signed Jeff Kent and J.D. Drew to favorable contracts, both of which yielded effective performance relative to the size and length of their deals.

•Avoided the temptation to out-bid all comers for Adrian Beltre, who has yet to justify the five year, $64 million deal given to him by Seattle after one of the greatest contract-drive walk years in history.

John Maine:

Since 2008, Maine has only made 24 starts and pitched only 121.0 innings, and heading into the winter, he's eligible for arbitration, meaning soon-to-be-official Mets GM Sandy Alderson will have to decide whether or not to tender him a contract. In addition to the possibility that Maine might miss 2011 entirely because of his shoulder surgery, there are a few reasons that Alderson should not tender him a contract this winter. Maine's walks per nine innings have steadily increased since he joined the Mets in 2006 while his strikeouts per nine have been good but not great. 2009 and 2010 are small samples, but since the beginning of 2008, Maine has not struck out enough hitters to compensate for all those that he walked. This is not a good trend.

Backman:

Wally Backman- The fans choice to be manager is Backman. But is this a wise choice? Fans love the fact that Backman has a Mets championship ring and has a Billy Martin feel to him. Fans love Backman so much that they disregard the baggage he brings with him. His stewardship of the Brooklyn Cyclones was a positive for Wally and when asked about the Mets job he made it clear that he would work with the GM and carry out the organizations plan. Backman doesn’t just pine to be a big league manger he wants to be the Mets manager. He will definitely get an interview but I’m not sure he’ll get the job.
