The 8 (i) (2) rule, which has been in effect for many years, was designed to prevent teams from cutting players and then signing them back for less money.
Takahashi’s agent, Peter Greenberg, said negotiations with the Mets were under way, although he would not characterize what stage they were in.
“We have been talking,” Greenberg said. “Hisa loved his time in New York, and hopefully, something can be worked out. If not, then he will have to look elsewhere.”

Cody Ross wins the NLCS MVP. He kept banging out extra base hits. He collected three doubles and three home runs out of seven hits total. He was an unlikely MVP, as San Francisco claimed him to block San Diego, and expected the Marlins to pull him back. Instead, Cody goes to the World Series after a big NLCS, keeping up his hitting despite an injured wrist from a hit by pitch. He might replace David Eckstein as everyone’s favorite gritty player.

I thank the Giants for eliminating the final bane of my existence. But Pat Burrell? Cody Ross? Matt Cain? Guillermo Mota? (The turning point of Game 6 was Mota warming up in the bullpen and not coming into the game.) I just can't root for the guy who kills the Mets, the rodeo clown who went on this tippie-toes to yell at Mike Pelfrey, the guy who beaned David Wright then tipped his cap smugly to the crowd, and the guy who shook off Paul Lo Duca before giving up a series changing triple to Scott Spiezio in '06. Can't do it. I wish Tim Lincecum and Jonathan Sanchez well. But I'll look forward to Frenchy receiving his World Series ring in April of 2011 when he opens up that packing envelope in the Royals clubhouse. And if I'm lucky, I'll get to bid on it while surfing through eBay in twenty years. Rangers in seven.

Brad Holt has found his comfort zone in the Arizona Fall League.
The former first-round Draft pick Brad Holt tossed three more scoreless innings Saturday as the Mesa Solar Sox snapped the Surprise Rafters' three-game winning streak with a 7-2 victory.
Selected 33rd overall by the Mets in 2008, Holt (2-0) allowed one hit while striking out five to maintain a perfect ERA through three AFL starts.

Because of a relatively obscure major league contract rule, the Mets have less than one week to re-sign the left-handed pitcher Hisanori Takahashi or lose him to another team. If Takahashi is not signed by Oct. 31, he can become a free agent, and if he does, he is prohibited from signing back with the Mets until May 15, virtually assuring that he will join another team.
