Wilpon comments on perceived lack of spending

Chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon told reporters that the Mets will end up spending roughly $145 million on 2011 payroll in spite of the conservative winter. "I don't think they realize the payrolll is up in the $145 million or better range," Wilpon said about casual observers. "I don't think people realize that. Unfortunately, we were somewhat hamstrung by what had happened before. Sandy's plan was to go and deal with it this year and make sure we have tremendous flexibility next year."

Of course when Jeff says "I don't think people realize that. Unfortunately, we were somewhat hamstrung by what had happened before", he means the mess Omar Minaya left this franchise in. Every team has a payroll or budget figure they try to abide by, but Minaya chose to splurge all of the money in the budget each off season on one player and then pull guys off the scrap heap the rest of the winter to fill all the other holes. This was evidence by signing Ollie Perez, Frankie Rodriguez and Jason Bay each of the last 3 off seasons.
