St. lucie 1, Bradenton 0

The St. Lucie Mets snapped their two-game losing streak Saturday night with a 1-0 victory over the Bradenton Marauders at Digital Domain Park. The win puts the Mets back over .500 at 31-30 on the second half and 69-62 overall.

It was yet another low scoring pitcher’s duel as Zack Wheeler tossed five shutout innings for the Mets and Brett Lorin made only one mistake for the Marauders. Lorin’s only mistake, happened in the fifth inning. Jefry Marte homered to lead off the fifth inning giving the Mets all the run support they would need. With the Mets ahead 1-0, the Marauders started to rally in the top of the ninth with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Jeff Kaplan came in with two on and nobody out and snuffed out the Marauders rally stranding the runners on second and third to record the save.

The Mets managed only three hits, but only one mattered, the solo home run off the bat of Jefry Marte providing the only run of the game for either team. Zack Wheeler improves to 2-2 with the win and Jeff Kaplan notched his twelfth save of the season.

The Mets head to Bradenton for two more games against the Marauders. Greg Peavey will get the start on Sunday. Peavey is 5-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 11 appearances, eight starts for St. Lucie. Peavey has struck out 34 while walking 12 and is holding opposing hitters to a .286 batting average covering 51.1 innings of work.
