Texas needs two pieces… immediately… to fill in an already great team.
Give them a top of the line starter, or a star outfielder, and they can go all
the way this year.
The Mets can’t help them in the outfield, but R.A.
Dickey would be the end all for the Rangers quest to win the World
Series this year. He’s healthy (not like Santana), he’s cheap (not like
Santana) and he’s been through this before.
Sure, all of Queens loves him, but the Rangers are prospect heavy and can
easily afford to trade RHH OF Mike Olt and C Jorge Alfaro.
Olt turns 24 next month and is currently playing AA. His stat line is
quite impressive: .291/.402/.588/.989, 26-HR, 76-RBI.
MLB Reports said this morning: “Mike
Olt is the Rangers’ prospect, outside of Profar, with the most trade value.
He’s young, close to the majors, and has a rare power/on-base combination. Olt
could probably bring the Rangers a solid top of the rotation starter, even if
it’s just a rental. Olt is talented, but what we have learned in the past with
how prospects don’t always become what we think they can (See Justin Smoak,
Greg Golson), the Rangers shouldn’t have a problem moving him. Beltre is signed
for a couple more years, and the Rangers still get decent production out of
first base. If it mean they dramatically increase their chances of winning the
World Series this year, Texas shouldn’t think twice about trading Mike Olt.”
He’s also not eligible for arbitration for years
(I’m going to make a guess here that Mike Napoli goes
away next season via free agency. Their second string catcher, Yorvit Torrealba, is also in his FA season. My guess,
if both of these guys go away, is that the Rangers will sign a top catcher in
the off-season, and their current AAA guy, Luis Martinez (AAA -
.267/.343/.386/.730, 5-E) would be his backup.
John Sickles has this on the “throw-in” catcher:
"Jorge Alfaro, C, Grade C+: Scouting reports and word-of-mouth are
glowing, praising offensive and defensive potential. Somehow he hit .300 with
power in the Northwest League despite appalling plate discipline, and he needs
a lot of polish on defense. Very young, high-ceiling, high-risk. I can't give a
higher grade to a guy with a 4/54 BB/K no matter what the scouting reports say.
Alfaro this year (2012) in the Sally League: - .270/.330/.448/.778, R/R
Olt could join Jason Bay and Jordany Valdespin in the opening day Mets
lineup and Alfaro could play Lucy.

Olt is a 3B not an OF.
Trading Dickey or Wright would mean they have abandoned hope of contending in 2013. I know you're all about 2014, but is it wise to give up on next year already? Are we still too early in the rebuilding process to have hope next year?
A rotation of Dickey, Santana, Neise, Wheeler, & Harvey maybe gets you somewhere next year. If you take Dickey out of that equation and replace him with Pelfrey (or an equivalent) then you are asking way too much of the kids.
At what point should the front office shift gears from rebuilding to contending? It would be a huge blow to this fanbase to throw 2013 out the window so soon.

I am stuck on 2014...
Despite age, as a knuckler Dickey has a great chance to be a cog in 2014. Still, the opportunity to add two or more hitting prospects would be enticing. Duda and Niewenheis are now concerns. Den decker is not a true prospect. It's been a rough stretch for the organization's hitting prospects.
The Mets need some real bats in 2013 or we're going to go through this same crap next year...
