Mack Stuff – The ‘Sandy Plan’, 45 FA Relief Pitchers, Juan Urbina, Ruben Tejada

Mack Stuff –  The ‘Sandy Plan’, 45 FA Relief Pitchers, Juan Urbina, Ruben Tejada

C Francisco Pena finished 15th in Dominican Winter League with a .271 BA, and 10th with 21-RBIs.

Hi Mack, While I agree with you about the fact we might as well play who we have, Kirk, Spin, Duda and Den Decker to see who might be viable long term I am hoping Sandy will be able to make a trade for a nice prospect from another team to compete for an outfield spot. I mean Cody Ross at 3 yrs and 26 mil...geeeeez! You only have to look as far as the Giants to see what great pitching can do for you. For the first time since Cashen was the man I'm believing Sandy has a real plan in place and I'll live with whatever goes down in 2013. The big question of course will be how much $$ will he be able to spend next off season. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night, Gary Seagren

I don’t know if ‘nice prospect’ will be the right word here… ‘nice fill-in’ maybe. The amount of money the Mets have left is still questionable… my guess is somewhere between $5-7mil… I would rather see the money spent on a quality relief pitcher than the few outfielders that are left. But, as I have said earlier, the Toronto deal has made me a Sandy believer and his patience has proven to me that he knows how to do his job. There will be at least one new outfielder in the lineup come opening day. We just have to wait this process out.

Juan Urbina tweeted that his father, 39-year old Ugueth Urbinna, has been released from prison after serving seven years for attacking the people that worked for him with a machete and pouring gasoline on them. Nic k Collias also reported:  “Alexander Mendoza at El Nacional reported this morning that Urbina’s fastball was still touching 90 while he was playing in the pen in Venezuela. Juan Vicente Zerpa, the general manager of the Leones de Escogido (Urbina’s old haunt in the winter leagues) said after welcoming Urbina back to society, “I heard that he’s going to come to the park and we’re going to have a conversation.” Kind of ominous-sounding, no? If this were a Scorcese movie, I’d be wary.” What I do hope for here is that the father can spend some time on the mound with the son and get his game straightened out.

Tejada's 2012 season paints the portrait of a "traditional" shortstop: a bat-control hitter with limited power. But there's some good news here. This slash line — and all the associated offensive production that went along with it — ended up giving Ruben a .304 wOBA (weighted on-base average) and 92 wRC+ (weight runs created, adjusted for league and park effects, expressed relative to a league average of 100). Ruben Tejada's offensive production, after adjusting for league and park, was about 8% worse than league average. That's actually not too bad! Especially for a shortstop! For the major leagues in 2012, shortstops only averaged an 86 wRC+. So while Ruben may have been 8% worse than league average, the average shortstop was considerably worse than that.  sbn.to/Vz4Pu1
