FLASH: Jhonny Peralta is closing in on a deal with the Cardinals

Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com tweeted a short while ago that a source has confirmed that free agent Shortstop Jhonny Peralta is closing in on a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals. Peralta was said to be a prime target of the Mets, but his asking price seemed to climb out of their range. Sandy Alderson met personally with Peralta at the GM meetings in Orlando, and it was thought that the Mets would be in the thick of the hunt for his services.

Initially, it was said that the Mets front office thought they would be able to sign Peralta to a two year deal, but statements by Peralta’s camp indicating they were seeking considerably more in both years and dollars threw cold water on the Mets’ hopes. More recently, it was reported that Peralta was holding at least one offer of 4 years at $52 million. There has been no confirmation of the terms of the prospective deal with the Cardinals.

Mack - 8:33pm - The word now is that the 4-yr, $52mil offer 'isn't even in the ballpark'...

This free agent season is simply amazing and I can't see how the Mets are going to walk away here with anyone of any quality. The market is out of control.

You are not going to see Alderson and Wilpon react positively here. And, maybe they are right. Two weeks ago Brian McCann was worth $50mil tops...  what's next... $200mil for Stephen Drew?

I;m now reading that "Jon Heyman of CBS Sports tweets that one team who offered Peralta four years and $52MM was told they're "not even in [the] game."

If that's the case, I'm glad to see the Mets didn't chase him. I would have loved to see Peralta signed at no more than 3/$39. He's a much better than average offensive SS, but he is surrounded by some uncertainty due to his connection to Biogenesis. After all, last year was the very first time in his career that his AVG was over .300. He is a career .268/.330/.425 hitter.

If indeed, his deal with the Cards dwarfs the 4/$52 numbers we previously heard, I will happily move on to Plan B and seek a quality shortstop in a trade.

You forgot to mention:

The Rockies got Greg Burke
The Phiilies overpaid Marlon Byrd
The A's signed Nick Punto
The Royals gave Jason Vargas 4 yrs.

BFD!

Most knowledgeable baseball people are congratulating the Mets for a smart signing of Young. Moreover, Young will in no way be Alderson's biggest acquisition of the off season. Be patient and see where we are in February.

Part of the problem is that Jeff Wilpon is offering incentive packagestha include gift cards to the Amway store at Citi Field and preferential investor tranche with their financial advisor.

I think I kind of like the idea of the Mets being about speed, power and defense........if the pitching holds up,
No Mets fan wants to see an average player end up with a David Wright type contract, simply because thats how the market is playing out.

Keep in mind
The more Peralta is paid....
The price in prospects increases when trading for shortstops
Pay more in $$$ ?
Pay more in prospects???
Or
Pay less, bottom feed hoping for miracles????

Hoping for miracles has resulted in game attendance/ticket sales plummeting to half of what they were years ago
What happens when met fans have lost all hope???

Herb

How did Young and Byrd compare in 2013?
Add to that Byrd will be calling a launching pad like Philly stadium home
If Byrd is over payed at $8 million...
What is Young's pay called

I admire your hope Herb
I really do
I would have stood shoulder to shoulder with you preaching for trust and hope as recent as last year

This is the year we as fans were promised to wait for
we waited

Well guys, I can see both your points of view.

I'm glad we didn't overspend on Peralta. That contract could be an albatross by years 3 and 4. The Cards can handle that, but the small market Metropolitans can ill-afford such a risk.

I'm far from crazy about the Young signing but at least it's only a one year deal. As much as I loved what Byrd did for us last season. I think it was an anomaly and he'll come back to earth this year. Playing at Bank will help him but year three it's not going to be pretty IMHO.

This is the year we were promised great things, so far I'm underwhelmed. The market blew up and the Mets weren't ready-that is no way to run a team.

I may be in the minority here but I just don't think the Mets trade pieces are all that attractive to other teams. At least to the point that they could bring us back a Braun, Bautista, Kemp or even an Ethier. These teams know the Mets are at a disadvantage and they will want the biggest bang for their buck.

If I'm the Dodgers, Jays or whoever, the conversation starts with Wheeler or Syndegaard. I just can't see a GM trading a top talent, injury risk or not without netting one of them.

Alderson would be a fool to trade either of them, but I have to believe that if we rely on trades to acquire the top flight power OF bat and a SS we would have to part with one of them.

I'd of much rather seen them go all in on one of the top FA first, lock them in and then fill in the blanks. The thing is any of them would've been an investment in the future of the team. Instead they seem intent on going the short-term loan route.

Bob
Byrd's career OPS is .760 and he is 36 years old, with 2 yrs and a vesting option.
Young's career OPS is .746 and he is 30 years old, with 1 year.
I like Byrd, especially since I caught his upper deck HR ball in July, but I think he comes back to earth during this contract.

D Whit,
So far you're underwhelmed, but that is like worrying that your horse is back in the middle of the pack at the 1/8 pole of a mile and a quarter race.

Actually, the Mets match up pretty well with the Dodgers and the Blue Jays. Dodgers need a 3B and SP, Jays need a 2B and SP. Of course, any team might start by asking for Zack or Thor, but that's not happening, and they all know that. A deal with either team starting with Murphy (or Flores) and Gee would result in serious discussions.

The Mets also match up well with the Rays. I wonder if a Duda (or Davis) for Yunel Escobar would work.

IF he goes to St Louis that also means that trading for a SS will cost a ton in prospects.

So my bet is Tejada next year.

It appears peralta did not "dwarf" 4yrs/52 mill

Alderson said they were looking for 2 of 1ss to upgrade offense
And reach his 2014 promise

So far Young is not enough of an upgrade as a starting of
That means ss NEEDS to be same or higher quality as peralta
Or
His 2014 pomise is worthless
