The Binghamton Mets sent 14 men to the plate and scored nine times in the fourth inning en route to a 9-6 win over the Erie SeaWolves in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park. The B-Mets’ season-high outburst secured their fourth series win of the season.
After Rainy Lara and Tommy Collier matched zeroes through three innings, the B-Mets offense erupted in the fourth. Binghamton sent 14 men to the plate, pounded out seven hits, took advantage of an error and two walks, and scored a season-best nine runs. Every B-Met starter crossed home in the inning.
Kevin Plawecki started the scoring by ripping a groundball with the bases loaded through the legs of Francisco Martinez at third base. The gaffe allowed the first two runs of the game to come home. Travis Taijeron followed by blasting a three-run homer to left, his first long ball of the season. The drive gave the B-Mets a five-run lead.
Following a walk and a single, Kyle Johnson lined an RBI single to left field. Brian Burgamy followed by bouncing a run-producing double off the left-field wall. His two-bagger chased Collier from the game.
Matt Reynolds greeted reliever Ryan Robowski by flaring an RBI single into right, kicking Binghamton’s lead to eight. The single capped a stretch of ten straight B-Mets reaching safely. Two batters later, Cory Vaughn singled home Binghamton’s final run of the inning.
Given a nine-run cushion, Lara struggled in the fourth inning. With two aboard, Dean Green put Erie on the board by blooping an RBI double to left. Francisco Martinez and Jamie Johnson followed with run-scoring singles. Lara pitched himself deeper into a hole with a pair of two-out walks, including a bases-loaded free pass to Eugenio Suarez. Aaron Westlake ended Lara’s day, and made it a three-run game, by zipping a two-run single into right field.
Jack Leathersich took over and got the final out of the inning. Leathersich returned for the fifth and slipped into a jam. The SeaWolves put the first three aboard via an error, a hit batter and a walk. With the tying run on base, the southpaw wiggled out of the jam unscathed with a strikeout, a pop out and a groundout.
Jon Velasquez posted two perfect innings of relief, before Cody Satterwhite posted a shutout eighth. Chasen Bradford worked a perfect ninth to lock down his fourth save of the season.
Velasquez (1-2) struck out four in two innings of relief and collected the official-scorer awarded victory. Collier (0-4) was tagged for nine runs (seven earned) on six hits over 3-1/3 innings in the loss. Lara allowed six runs on eight hits over 3-2/3 innings in the no-decision.
The B-Mets (12-8) open a three-game series against the Akron RubberDucks on Monday night at 6:35 PM at Canal Park. RHP Tyler Pill takes the mound against RHP Will Roberts. Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
