D-Whit - It Was 45 Years Ago Today...Sunday July 27th 1969

July 27th

The good news is the Cubs lost. Unfortunately so did the Mets. Chicago fell to visiting Los Angeles and Don Drysdale 6-2. New York couldn’t take advantage though-getting beat 6-3 in front of a packed house (55,391) of Shea faithful on the final Sunday of July.

The Reds jumped on starter Don Cardwell with a three-run 1st capped off by Tony Perez’s 2 run shot. A fielding miscue and Alex Johnson’s double added two more in the 4th sending Cardwell to the showers.  The Mets trimmed the Red lead to 5-2 in the 6th following Cleon Jones’ run-scoring single and a Tommie Agee sac-fly. Ron Swoboda then came to the plate with runners on the corners but went down on strikes.

Reds starter, southpaw Gerry Arrigo scattered 7 hits over 7 and Wayne Granger went 1 2/3 for his 13th save.

I loved Don Cardwell...tough pitcher. Good memory.
