Tom Brennan - METS MINORS SPOTLIGHT: TYLER BASHLOR

METS MINORS SPOTLIGHT: TYLER BASHLOR

For some guys, their YTD stats are a really good indicator for what to expect of them.

Sometimes, other guys can have a really bad week that totally skew their numbers.  Ando so they are likely far better than their full season stats imply.

One such gent is Tyler Bashlor.

In 3 outings from June 28 to July 3, he was pure limburger left out in the heat - HE STUNK - BADLY:

1 2/3 IP, 9 H, 10 R, 3 BB, 0 K.  Jeesh!

The other 31 innings this year, though?  57 Ks.

That's 16.5 Ks per 9 IP.  WOW.  And only the same # of runs allowed in those 31 innings as in those awful 1 2/3 innings.

And how has he done since those 3 awful outings?

Awfully good: 4 outings, 3.1 IP, 1 run, no walks, 8 Ks. Great.

Yeah, but Tom, he's allowed 30 hits and 19 walks in his 32.2 IP...isn't that awful high?

Yeah, but most of it occurred in about 6 outings of his 31 outings.  Most of the rest, he has been spectacular.

His 19 walks in 32.2 IP are high, but on May 24, he walked 4 in 2/3 of an inning...but only a total of 7 in his last 16 outings.

I greatly look forward to his promotion to AA - onward to greater challenges.  Because he is statistically outstanding 80% of the time he is out there...he just needs to get that up to 90% +.

P.S.

Dominic Smith is on a July tear (.385/.429/.723 in 15 games). Hot and ready for a call up.

It's interesting to predict how Smith will do versus how Rosario will do. I am of the opinion Smith has a John Olerud type of career ahead of him.

Smith can have an Olerud type career if he is really diligent at weight control. I can't imagine he is too heavy playing in the heat of Vegas, where temps starting night games can be 100 degrees.

As far as Bashlor, he will have to prove to be as good as, and more resilient than, good old Henry Owens.

I looked Henry up earlier, and he had that great year in 2006 in AA where he fanned an unconscious 74 in 40 innings and allowed very few runners. But I think he blew out his shoulder in 2007 and ended up with just 25 major league games and 27 decent innings under his belt where he only fanned 18. A shame.
