Hot Stove - 12-23-17

The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to bring back ex-Mets P Pedro Beato, with a minor league contract.

I always liked Beato and thought he would be a great long term Mets reliever... by the way... why is Vic Black still not pitching anywhere in baseball???

The Orioles has signed a 1-year minor league deal with ex-Mets phenom prospect, Aderlin Rodriquez.

Here, like Fernando Martinez, is another perfect example that all top prospects don't pan out.

MLBTR reports that there is some 'interest' by some teams to put a deal together for Mets CF Juan Lagares.

Many teams recognize the need for quality defense in center field and very few play it at the level that Lagares does. It even makes some dismiss his history of producing a below average return from his bat, but what it doesn't project whether or not he can stay healthy in 2018.

Another ex-'can't miss' prospect... who missed badly... RP Henry Owens, was signed to a minor league contract with the Dodgers.

Saw Vic Black pitch an inning for the Richmong Flying Squirrels (FA AA affiliate) last summer. Had dinner with my cousin's kid also a RP on that team.

In this day and age, Lagares' contract won't scare some teams. And they might just get his career year in a trade.

All Juan Lagares had to do is get serious in the weightroom so he could drive the ball better to all fields. Obviously, he did not do that. Even a retarded six year old could get this. So why care about him really? Tradebait.

Wilmer Flores is a solid bench warmer and good guy. But in all honesty, we all have seen that he is not an everyday starting infielder (year after year)and to entertain this notion that he is, makes me wonder about the Mets a little bit. Try Luis Guillorme on second.

Anyone on planet earth that thinks that both Stephen Matz and Matt Harvey can go a whole season starting without breaking their pitching arm up is not playing with a full deck.

Here's how I see the starting rotation and bullpen as of this moment: 1. Syndergaard 2. deGrom 3. Matz (with someone ready at AAA for when Matz goes down hurt again sometime in early May) 4. Wheeler 5. Wheeler 6. Regnault. Right here there are three good starting pitcher candidates for being injured. Third, fourth, and fifth rotation slots. So have a backup ready at AAA for each one, to incl. Bartolo Colon.

The 3,4,5, and 6 batting order slots: 3. Cabrera, 4. Cespedes 5. Domingo Santana (trade with Brewers, RF Domingo is age 25, 30 HR's in 2017, on the trade block with Milwaukee, makes $550,000 in 2018 contract) 6. Michael Conforto. A MLB winning team has to have four big league power batters in its lineup. Maybe send Milwaukee Matz or Harvey and eat 1/2 their contract going there. Plus, maybe a promising future rookie.
