New Met - RHRP Anthony Swarzak

The Mets have struck a deal with righty Anthony Swarzak, according to Marc Carig of Newsday (via Twitter). It’ll be a two-year, $14MM contract if Swarzak passes his physical.

Swarzak, 32, will bolster the late-inning mix for the Mets, who had stated all winter long that the bullpen was a priority. He was the option chosen after New York failed to land a few other targets, Carig notes.
Of course, the veteran looks to be a nice consolation prize. After all, he turned in 77 1/3 innings of 2.33 ERA ball, with 10.6 K/9 against 2.6 BB/9, in a strong 2017 campaign.

If deGrom, Syndergaard, Harvey, Wheeler, and Matz are going to be the 2018 rotation...

it would leave Montero, Lugo, Gsellman, Rhame, Callahan, Regnault, Roseboom, and Smoker for the last 4 pen slots

My prediction is Smoker will step up big this season.

Swarzek was Keith Law's top rated RP on the free agent market. For whatever that's worth.

Joel Sherman said on Twitter that his improved numbers last year were not a fluke. Says 4 scouts that maturity stepped in here and helped control the 95 mph heater he throws

If he's good for an inning, everybody else's job will get easier.
