The Keepers - #93 - 1B - Alexander Sanchez

93. Alexander Sanchez – 1B – DSL – 19/yrs.

In typical Mets fashion, there never is any press on these Latin dudes that are signed and then assigned to either the DSL or VSL teams. We have no idea what their past is, how much they signed for, or what to expect from them.

Alexander Sanchez was placed on the 2009 roster, and split time at first base with Jeychol De Leon. This is a typical DSL platoon, where both guys hit mostly against right handed pitchers, simply because they aren’t that many lefties in this league. De Leon impressed, but the 19-year old turned head, hitting .372/.413/.524/.937 in 191 at bats. Folks, that’s big offensive numbers for this level of rookie team.

He also struck out only 19 times, hitting 4 homers, and knocking in 42 RBIs.

Forecast: It’s hard to tell where this kid is heading in 2010, especially now that Omar is coming back. There’s no method to the madness of a pattern at this level. Some never play here at all, others play for three years with decent stats.

I don’t have a ton of contacts south of the border, but the one’s I do have say that this kid has bat speed way ahead of anyone else coming off of this 2009 team. Thst’s hard to ignore from a 19-year okf with very little formal training.

Right now, I’d have to guess that things will slow down a little , first base wise, since so many “non-prospects” had a decent season (we’ll also cover that this month with our analysis by position). If I had to guess. I’d say the GCL mets.
