Tom Brennan - 2017 DRAFTEES' PERFORMANCE SO FAR

Tom Brennan - 2017 DRAFTEES' PERFORMANCE SO FAR

The Mets signed over 30 of its 40 draftees in 2017.

Where you are drafted is only loosely correlated with how you’ve performed.

For instance, my 1 thru 3 performers were drafted in the 21st thru 27th rounds.
Everyone’s performance overall so far?  Well, since you asked:

My # 20 guy, Marcel Renteria, was probably happy I wrote this prior to game time Thursday, because he got hammered Thursday nite after Harvey's 3 innings. Marcel is NOT pitching like a 6th round selection so far, but more like Marcel Marceau.

The weakest performance for the past seven years is a toss-up between Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins.

Reese, this draft by the Mets was immediately denigrated by pundit experts, and my thoughts at the time simply could be summed up as: I hope they are all wrong. NOPE!

Peterson and Vientos could still be very solid first and second round picks, but collectively, the rest of the draft looks poor until proven otherwise.

Its interesting to follow the draft pick and success. Its even more interesting in the NHL where the draft picks sometimes go right to the parent club. The number of first rounders, for instance, that reach the NHL versus the number of first rounders who reach MLB is vastly different. The competition for baseball is so vast!

I must say that I love this comment:

When we discuss weak Sandy performance, one thing that I think warrants criticism of him is the weight of Dom Smith. Dom blamed a lot of it on his ability with minor league allowances and limited places to find eats after minor league games.

When you have a guy who could be a possible several time All Star, but he clearly has unique weight challenges, why not hire a chef/nutritionist to be assigned to him throughout the season?

I saw the 9th inning last night and, especially for a 22 year old, Smith is way too round around the mid section. To me, he looks like he is at least 20 pounds overweight. Let's do a girth comparison:

Bart Colon was 185 as a 21 year old, 225 as a 24 year old, and look how big he got. Smith was 185 at 18, and already 260 as a 22 year old. Same height. That is scary to me if I am an owner looking to protect his investment.

Bad management, in my opinion. The kid needed concerted professional weight assistance, in my opinion.

Vientos is 4 for 5 with a homer today - a breakout game for Mark. jumped to .254

Like most clubs, lots of swings and misses. there is plenty to be happy about and sad about in Mets land. I think Sandy has been solid overall. Particularly leading up to WS in 2015. TC on the other hand is driving me nuts these days. His refusal to bat Smith the other night bugged me to no end.
